University Overview
The University of New England (UNE) is a small, low-ranking, regional university based in Armidale in country New South Wales and is known by some as The Cockatoo University. The main focus of UNE is to service students in the local and surrounding areas who are not able to get into a university in Sydney or who would prefer for some reason to remain and study in the regional town. Along with this, the University works hard to attract full fee-paying international students, and through this has established itself as a vital component of the local economy.
Undergraduate
University of New England began with a small range of undergraduate programs designed to serve the local community in areas such as agriculture. Since then the program offering has expanded so local students who do not want to go to Sydney for university study or cannot for some reason have a better range of options. There has also been some effort to attract international students with programs they are attracted to.
Postgraduate
UNE also offers postgradute opportunities for both local and international students. This means students can study their chosen subject in more depth and at a higher level. There are many different reasons why students want to do this such as improving their career prospects and trying to increase their earnings capacity. Some students also might want to follow their passion in a particular area and further their knowledge about something they enjoy.
Study Online
UNE has a long history with distance education even before the Internet with courses done partly by correspondence. Distance education gives students flexibility in their study choices and does not tie them down to be at any particular location at any time. Other universities in Australia have a strong study online presence including Swinburne, Charles Sturt University (CSU), and Deakin universities. There is also Open Universities which brings together some other universities as part of a study online marketing strategy.
International Students
International students are an important source of income for the University of New England and it tries to attact them by paying agents all over the world for a referral of international students who want to study in a small regional town. This payment can be between 10% and 20% of the international student's fees depending on the level of the student and what they are studying.
The University has had a problem with international students and plagiarism over the years and has tried to deal with this by investigating the issue and then developing policies so that if a student is suspected of plagiarising then there is a standard procedure regarding how to deal with it.
Tuition Fees
University of New England tuition fees vary depending on student status and the course being undertaken.
