University Overview

The notion of partnership characterises the way University of Tasmania operates. The Utas primary partnership is between staff and students who work together in the areas of core business for the University: achieving excellence in teaching and learning and research. UTas offers one of the widest range of courses in Australia yet is small enough to provide an environment where each student can enter into a partnership with staff to achieve their goals. The University has adopted a strategy of preserving and developing teaching and learning and research of national and international significance in areas that take advantage of the University's location in the State of Tasmania.

Utas works with universities around the world to offer students an international experience as part of their study - UTas has exchange arrangements with over 60 countries throughout Europe, Asia and North America. Utas also works with researchers in many countries on issues that have international significance. A tiny sample of some of the work that UTas researchers and post-graduate students are involved in include global warming (with NASA), tourism in China, aquaculture in Vietnam, forestry in Indonesia, computing in Korea, cardio-vascular disease with the World Health Organisation and mineral resources projects in 17 countries.

Undergraduate

Undergraduate degrees at UTas can be undertaken by students through its bachelor's and honours program. Students may apply for admission to the university on the basis of meeting General Entry Requirements (GER). UTas is a good place to study because of its commitment to excellence in learning and teaching as well as in research development.

The university also provides undergraduate students with the benefits of smaller classes, personalized attention and ready access to lecturers and tutors. It also has strong connections with local and national industry to offer practical learning. Study exchange programs and overseas internships are available as well. Postgraduate

UTas has a range of postgraduate coursework degrees to educate, challenge and support graduate students as they further develop the knowledge, experience and capacity to think. Students can undertake postgraduate courses either through coursework and research. The university also offers study options such as full-time, part-time and distance education studies.

Examples of faculties at UTas include the school of arts, education, health, law, science, engineering and technology, business and economics and marine and antarctic studies. Study Online

Study online courses in the undergraduate and postgraduate levels are available at UTas. Students can choose from an array of study areas which includes the arts, business, education, health, science, engineering and technology, marine and antarctic science and applied science.

MyLO which stands for My Learning Online is the online learning environment at UTas. Lecture recording and video delivery services are available at UTAS through the EchoSystem application. Recordings are also available as RSS feeds (podcasts/vodcasts).

Off-campus students can also gain access to web conferencing which connects students, lecturers, tutorials, support and group work for students in different locations, via the Internet. Student support is also provided to students such as online workshops, online consultations and talking to an online adviser.

International Students

The University of Tasmania offers one of the best support services to overseas students. Before students arrive in Australia, UTAS provides important information on applying for student visa, managing finances, instructions on getting to Tasmania and booking for accommodation. For students who wish to bring along family members, the university also offers advice on the requirements and necessary procedures. The university provides free airport pick-up service to international students upon arrival.

Scholarships

UTas is committed to rewarding excellence and improving access to higher education by providing a wide variety of undergraduate and postgraduate scholarships to students. The university's scholarship program provides students with significant financial and academic support. Scholarships are given according to a student's academic standing, economic status and involvement in extracurricular, leadership and sports activities.

The university offers scholarships and discounts to international students. The Tasmanian International Scholarship (TIS) provides commencing international students with a partial reduction in registered tuition fees for the duration of their course, provided satisfactory grades are maintained. TIS is available for most undergraduate and postgraduate coursework degrees offered by UTas.

University Life

Clubs and societies play a vital role in university life at UTas. During the orientation week, various clubs and societies showcase what they have on offer and where students can sign up. For students who want to maintain an active lifestyle, they may join sports and recreation clubs. The UTas gym which has weights and cardio rooms, as well as set classes, is open for student use.

Food outlets and shops are placed on all main campuses and on most satellite campuses so access to food and drink during the day is available. Student life at UTas is also filled with social events such as student parties, travels and outings. Support services such as counselling, disability services, medical services, financial assistance, accommodation services and learning support are in place to help students adjust to campus life.
